Fast-track your career as a Civils Operative in the Utilities sector

This Skills Bootcamp is a short, highly focused training programme designed to supercharge your skills.

The course is fully funded through the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, meaning it’s freely available to all unemployed adults (aged 19 or over) living in the Derbyshire or Nottinghamshire region.

When you join the bootcamp, you’ll be given a wealth of practical experience and teachings that’ll let you begin your Civils Operative career.

This bootcamp programme has a blend of classroom learning and onsite work experience.

It’s delivered over three weeks and is a combination of face-to-face teaching, practical activities and work experience in the field with guided mentoring.

The bootcamp covers the following industry-recognised units:

  • Location and avoidance of underground apparatus (NRSWA Unit LA01)
  • Signing, lighting and guarding (NRSWA Unit 1)
  • Excavation in the highway (NRSWA Unit 2)
  • Reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials (NRSWA Unit 3)
  • Reinstatement of sub-base and road base in non-bituminous materials (NRSWA Unit 4)
  • Reinstatement in cold lay non-bituminous materials (NRSWA Unit 5)
  • Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete pathways (NRSWA Unit 9)
  • Plus, an accredited emergency first aid qualification.
What does a Civils Operative do?

Civils Operatives in the Utilities sector play a crucial role in maintaining and expanding utility infrastructure and are typically involved in construction activities related to utility networks. These networks include water, energy and telecommunications.

You’ll work towards gaining the following qualifications on this course:

  • Emergency First Aid at Work Qualification
  • Street Works Excavation and Reinstatement Qualification

This Smart Awards, industry-recognised qualification provides routes to registration on the Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR), required under the New Roads and Street works Act 1991.

You’ll also receive a certificate of attendance and achievement detailing the topics successfully completed for all the below non-accredited training modules.

  • Asbestos Awareness
  • Abrasive Wheels
  • Manual Handling

This certificate can be used as:

  • Recognition of Prior Learning toward a construction apprenticeship programme.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning toward a Civil Engineering Level 3 diploma.
