Build your core English skills and knowledge

Our free Functional Skills English courses give you the ability to develop your skills in English to help you gain the most from work, education, and everyday life. They are designed for individuals who are looking to become confident in their use of fundamental English knowledge and skills. The courses will enable you to demonstrate your ability to read, write, speak, listen, and communicate in English at an appropriate level, and to apply the knowledge and skills to real-life situations.

Our Functional Skills English qualifications are available at different levels depending on your prior knowledge, skills and qualifications. You will complete a short initial assessment to determine the most appropriate level of study.

This qualification is delivered online one evening a week over 12 weeks. Weeks 11 and 12 are exam prep time.

Learners may also wish to study a Functional Skills Maths course with us.

 

 

This qualification includes three mandatory components:

  1. Speaking, listening & communicating – This component is internally assessed, and learners must complete two assessed tasks
    1. Presentation and Q&A
    2. Group discussion
  2. Reading – Learners must complete one written examination
  3. Writing – Learners must complete one written examination

Learners will work towards achieving a City and Guilds Functional Skills qualification at Entry Level 3, Level 1 or Level 2. You will complete an initial assessment to help us determine the most appropriate level of study.

 

 

The aim of this course is to improve your English skills, allowing you to access one of our further courses, many of which have links to live local jobs.

  • Age 19+
  • If unemployed must be in receipt of state benefits (UC/JSA/ESA/Income Support)
  • If employed must be earning less than £33,958.60
