Our ESOL courses (English for Speakers of Other Languages) are designed to help you improve your English skills for everyday life and employment. Delivered from our training location in St Helens, this free training course is ideal no matter whether you’re starting from scratch or ready to specialise. With our ESOL for Employment training course, you’ll find a pathway that’s right for you.

In St Helens, with a 74.4% employment rate and just 3.6% unemployment, according to ONS, offers growing opportunities in retail, construction, and professional services, as reported by UK Data.

This programme has been funded by the Liverpool City Region combined Authority’s Adult Skills Fund 

 

By the end of each level, you will achieve recognised ESOL qualifications that reflect your progress in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. These build step by step, giving you greater confidence in daily life which will help prepare you for further study or employment pathways.

You will gain recognised qualifications, stronger English skills, and greater confidence that can improve your chances of finding work. You’ll also have the option to progress onto digital skills training or career-specific pathways that support entry into different sectors.

Your ESOL Learning Pathway

Our ESOL courses are free to access if the individual meets the eligibility criteria. There are a number of entry points for participants, listed below.

ESOL Entry Level 1

50 days | Face to Face delivery

Beginner English course focusing on the basics such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

Perfect if you have little or no English and want to feel more confident in daily life.

ESOL Entry Level 2

50 days | Face to Face delivery

Intermediate English course to help you communicate clearly in everyday situations and at work.
Ideal if you can already use some English and want to progress.

  • Living and Working in the UK
  • Preparation for employment

Digital Skills

7 days | Face to Face delivery

Build essential digital skills such as:

  • Using devices and handling information
  • Creating and editing
  • Communicating
  • Transacting
  • Being safe and responsible online.

This is important for everyday life, the workplace, and future learning.

ESOL Entry Level 3
& Career Pathways

50 days | Face-to-face delivery

Once you reach ESOL Entry Level 3, you can take your English learning into a career pathway.

What is covered?

  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Speaking and Listening
  • Living and Working in the UK

Specialist pathways include: Building and Construction, Health and Social Care, Early Years, Hair and Beauty.

Are you eligible?

  • Aged 19+
  • Must be a resident of the Liverpool City Region
  • If unemployed must be in receipt of state benefits (UC/JSA/ESA/Income Support)
  • If employed must be in receipt of low wages (lower than 35,864.40 and able to evidence this)
  • Asylum seekers who have lived in the UK for 6 months or longer while their claim is being considered by the Home Office, and no decision has been made on their claim
