After working in a coffee shop for multiple years, Jacob Powell from Liverpool embraced the chance to train in one of his life-long passions and change his career after being told about the opportunity by his barber.
Jacob, who signed up to a Barbering course delivered by adult training provider Complete Skills Solutions (CSS), was able to take the 11-week course for free thanks to meeting the eligibility criteria of the ESFA’s adult skills fund (ASF).
During the course, Jacob learnt the tools of the trade, combining the theoretical elements of barbering with practical know how. Supported throughout by his CSS tutor Karl, Jacob was quick to sing his praises when we caught up with him:
“Karl, was unbelievable. He taught me absolutely everything I know.”
After achieving his VTCT Level 2 & 3 Diplomas in Barbering, Jacob secured an interview with Barbers No.1, who offered him a job on the spot!
Fast forward seven years and Jacob continues to shine, and he has recently added another skill to his chair, having now trained as a Barbering tutor. He’s now gone full circle and is training aspiring barbers for Complete Skills Solutions.
When asked about what he enjoys most about being a Barbering trainer, Jacob said:
“I train all different age ranges on the Barbering courses – many who’ve decided they want to try something new or change careers like I did. This course is a great opportunity to do that.
“My favourite part of being a trainer is seeing an initially nervous group of people grow in confidence and skills and become a close-knit classroom.”
Jacob is a wonderful example of a learner who has made the decision to change career paths and shown lasting dedication and passion for their craft.
